DS Smith and Absolut Vodka implement fibre-based transit packaging

DS Smith and Absolut Vodka, a subsidiary of the Pernod Ricard group, have integrated a brown box packaging system for the distribution of flavoured spirit products. The collaboration focused on replacing previous high-gloss white packaging with a fibre-based corrugated solution. This transition supports logistical requirements for glass bottle protection during global transit to retail outlets and direct-to-consumer channels.

The packaging is constructed from 100% recyclable corrugated cardboard. The structural design is engineered to withstand vertical pressure and resist crushing during stacking and handling. The material properties provide mechanical cushioning, which reduces the risk of glass breakage during international shipping. By moving away from white glossy coatings, the solution utilizes a brown kraft exterior, which simplifies the recycling process and reduces the reliance on specific chemical coatings.

The packaging utilizes specific artwork and colour-coded printing to identify different product variants, such as lime, citron, pear, and watermelon. This system maintains brand recognition through bold typeface while standardizing the primary packaging material across the flavoured vodka range. Since 2025, Absolut Vodka has utilized these boxes for exports within the European market. The implementation aligns with industrial shifts toward circular economy standards and the reduction of non-recyclable components in secondary packaging.
