Automated Poultry Processing Line Architecture for High-Capacity Cutting Operations
JBT Marel engineered a reinforced cutting framework to align poultry processing infrastructure with European safety standards and higher operational line loads.

The poultry processing industry faces simultaneous shifts toward higher average bird weights and elevated line velocities. Standard cutting equipment experiences increased mechanical stress and wear under these continuous load profiles. In response, processing facilities require heavy-duty industrial automation platforms capable of handling larger poultry profiles while maintaining anatomical yield accuracy, operational safety, and continuous inspection capabilities.
Structural Reinforcement and Stainless Steel Engineering
JBT Marel redesigned the mechanical housing and superstructure of the automated turkey cutting platform to absorb elevated dynamic forces. To enhance torsional rigidity and structural stability under high-load processing conditions, the engineering team removed all structural aluminum components, replacing them entirely with food-grade stainless steel assemblies. This mechanical transition prevents oxidation, extends mean time between maintenance cycles, and stabilizes cutting tolerances during continuous multi-shift operations.
Enclosure Architecture and Safety Compliance
To address mechanical hazards without obstructing line-of-sight monitoring, the platform incorporates a full-perimeter mesh barrier system:
- Floor-to-ceiling enclosure: The mesh perimeter extends fully to the floor plane, eliminating lower gaps to prevent operator access to moving drive assemblies and cutting modules.
- Regulatory alignment: The enclosure meets current CE machinery directive safety requirements for industrial food processing plants.
- External monitoring: Line operators can visually verify tooling configurations—such as stepless vertical positioning on front-half and thigh cutters—without entering the operating envelope.
- Operational access: Dedicated access panels allow technicians to calibrate individual cutting modules to variations in bird batch dimensions before re-securing the protective perimeter.
Throughput Parameters and Modular Deployment
The system processes up to 2,000 birds per hour, portioning incoming product into standardized breast caps, wings, drumsticks, thighs, and neck cuts. Processing plants can deploy the platform across modular physical configurations based on available factory space. Individual processing units integrate inline with existing facility conveyor systems, enabling facilities to achieve high-capacity portioning without compromising operator safety standards or system reliability.
